Hi! My name is Rachel Voss.
I am a typical high school teenager with a sporty set
of wheels.

My story begins on Christmas, 2002, when I was 12. An arterial venous malformation in my spine caused 2 aneurysms that compressed my spinal cord, leaving me paralyzed from the waist down. My life was changed forever. But when one door closes another one opens, and although I'm on a different path now, the journey has been exhilarating.

Learning to cope with paralysis at a young age has taught me many things: patience, responsibility, discipline, determination, perseverance, compassion, and independence. My confidence and faith have grown, and I've learned that with support from friends and family I can make it through any challenge. My mom, dad, 30 year old sister, Sarah, and 22 year old brother, Nathan, have been my strongest supporters from the start. They have celebrated my victories and lifted me up after defeat. We have grown as a family and as individuals.

My experiences during the past five years have helped me focus on what I need to do to lead a significant life. I intend to major in Psychology at college so that I can help patients who are in rehabilitation. I want to compete in sports on a college team and play in an adult league for disabled athletes after I graduate. My long term goal is to represent our country on the USA Paralympic team in basketball, field events, or weight lifting. I plan to continue volunteering throughout my life to help others realize that our life experiences make each of us unique. We must embrace our differences and celebrate the human spirit.

I am so grateful for the generosity of everyone who is helping me. My
family works hard to find the means to pay for my medical needs, sports equipment, travel and competition expenses, but without the support of so many people who I may never even meet, it would be financially impossible to pursue my dreams. Thank you very much for your support.
